Default Fast Track from 4.5.1 to 4.5.3

This post started out as a question but it is now a solution. It is WAY easier to upgrade than it looks but it took me 2 hours before I knew what the path was.

If you have 4.5.1 installed you only need this patch to bring you up to 4.5.2.3 and nothing else, so ignore all the other patches on Mamboforge.

http://mamboforge.net/frs/download.p...-stable.tar.gz

inside the archive in /installation/sql is the sql data for updating the database.
The official update doc from 4.5.1 - 4.5.2(.3) is this one and explains the sql process:
http://help.mamboserver.com/index.ph...03&Item id=62
Then it's just a matter of overwriting the old files with the new ones.

After that to patch to 4.5.3 copy the new files found in:

http://mamboforge.net/frs/download.p...o_4.5.3.tar.gz

(The official upgrade doc for 4.5.2.3 - 4.5.3 is in the install archive.)

You are now up to date.

In case you didnt know in ftp if you drop a directory on a directory of the same name it WILL NOT delete its contents only overwrite files with newer ones and add new files. All your componants/mambots/modules are safe.

I did have one error which was caused by my FTP prog not overwriting a few files properly. (something with a 57 in it). It was fixed by completely deleting the "includes" directory and fresh copying. You may need to do it to /administrator/includes too.

Hope this saves a few people a bit of time figuring it out!

Default my cheat way

Hi,

dont know if this will help you but I just successfully upgraded from 4.5.1.a stable to 4.5.3.

I did it by using phpmyadmin to backup my SQL database as per normal to a file on my local PC.

I then
a. downloaded 4.5.3 to my PC apache server directory
b. created a blank sql database
c. ran the zip install fileand had pointed it at the new sql database file
d. then it working ok, I used phpmyadmin to upload the saved sql file to the new database file.

It crashed at first becuase the Javabean template is not in the new 4.5.3 version but when I copied this directory from my old templates directory to the 4.5.3 templates directory it worked ok and I have not found any bugs. I should say my setup is straight forward vanilla with no addins.

While I do not know what the consequences of this are - I have my backups and my original version

I was told by Mambo expert that I should have used a upgrade path but on the mamboforge serve where mambo 4.5.3 was downloaded from - I could see no upgrade path or any documentation on how to do a upgrade if there was one there.

see this thread where I got help
http://forum.mamboserver.com/showthr...605#post309605

or go to

http://mamboforge.net/frs/?group_id=5 where I still found nothing helpful on how to upgrade, i.e. a step by step instructions.

Hope this helps

Thumbs up Re: Fast Track from 4.5.1 to 4.5.3

Me too. This thread was perfect fodder for me, given I am not a terribly experienced Mambo user, and I wanted to upgrade my 4.5.1a installation up to 4.5.3h (the latest version). So thank you, mbay, for your rough guide.

I am about to follow these instructions to upgrade from 4.5.1 to 4.5.3h and I was just wondering if I can just use 4.5.3h for the last step, as opposed to using 4.5.3, as per instructions, and then apply 4.5.3 to 4.5.3h patch.

I desperately need to upgrade from 4.5.1a stable to the latest version to avoid any possible exploits but I need alot more step by step details than what is found in this thread. I know how to back up the site but not sure where to put the patch, and dont know anything about where the "archive in /installation/sql is the sql data for updating the database" is, so could someone please help me to learn this ? Help greatly appreciated, I dont want to wreck my site or lose any mods, hacks, customizations, smf bridge etc etc, thanks in advance,, RAT

Hi maid, I upgraded following these steps and everything was fine. The only thing I did different is I downloaded 4.5.3h instead of 4.5.3.

Rat, it's very easy, just follow the readme. Don't apply the patch, just update to version 4.5.2 and then overwrite that with version 4.5.3h.

When it says "archive in /installation/sql is the sql data for updating the database" it simply means: open (locally) the folder of the Mambo package you just downloaded and expanded, go to the folder called installation and then run the sql update. Depending on what system you use, you can either apply the sql file via your control panel or you can open the sql file in a text editor, copy the entire content and paste it in the SQL tab's textarea of your phpMyAdmin.

As long as you have a backup (data+structure) to go back to you can always keep trying.
Put your site offline if it has a lot of traffic in the meantime.

Thanks marcny, I am still somewhat confused having never accessed these folders before, where is this "readme" you speak of ? And it will tell me how to update without applying the patch ? And when you say "open and expand the folder of the Mambo package I just downloaded", is that the patch thing or do I download something else,,the 4.5.3h ?? When I find the installation folder, how do I "run" the sql update ? Is there an .exe or what ? (see I am very unsure of what I am doing here lol) I have never used phpmyadmin but I can probly figure that out or I can do the copy content thing you mentioned there. I know how to use WS_ftp pretty good too if that is of any help. I just need some more step by step on this (and confidence, lol) so please if you can help me I would greatly appreciate it ! Thanks again, RAT

Thanks mbay. However you say overwriting with the old files with the new ones. MamboV4.5.2.3-stable.tar.gz is a full installation of Mambo - did you omit some files or not? or did you use the patch - Patch_4.5.2_to_4.5.2.3.zip

garypi - could you tell us exactly which version of Mambo you are on,and which version you are trying to upgrade to?

Full installation packages contain the sql upgrades inside the installation/sql/ directory.

Whichever upgrade path you are taking,it's usually O.K to run the upgrade sqls in sequence then finally overwrite all your Mambo core files with a fresh set of the latest stable release 4.5.3h (not forgetting the two-file security patch)

If your site is highly customised, and you've added code to the core files, then obviously over-writing them will cause you to lose all your custom edits.
In that case, you'll need to patch the core files by manually adding/ammending the security fixes and code updates to all affected files.
Conversely, you could go ahead with the full overwrite then re-add your custom edits - I personally find this to be more easy, but it does of course rely upon the fact records of the customisations have been kept.

@RAT - you sound like you should do this in a safe. i.e local environment before wreaking it on your live site.

maligned-geek - thanks. I have aquired a site that is on 4.5.1.a What is confusing me is the fact that there seems to be a missing upgrade to 4.5.2 Is this a Joomla issue? I am now tired of hunting around the forum to find answers for the right upgrade path. I think I am almost 100% certain, besides the database updates, what to do now to upgrade from 4.5.1 which is :

1) download V4.5.2.3-stable.tar.gz - and extract all files
2) run database updates from: /installation/sql is the sql data for updating the database - there are 6 - drop_table, mambo, sample_data, upgrade45_109to451, upgrade451to452, upgrade4014to45. Do I run drop_table, mambo, sample_data(?) and upgrade451to452 or just upgrade451to452?
3) Then it should be be simple to just overwrite all the files like you say from V4.5.2.3-stable.tar.gz

Thanks for your help.

I don't know why you're trying to upgrade to V4.5.2.3-stable.tar.gz?

upgrade451to452 is what you'd need for that.

Is there a reason? You are making things difficult for yourself where security updates are concerned if you do not upgrade to 4.5.3h.

Thanks again.
No I am trying to follow the instructions in the first post first. Are you saying that I can go straight to 4.5.3h after the db update of upgrade451to452 ?

http://forum.mamboserver.com/showthread.php?t=73301

Post #4 onwards - the upgrade sqls are contained in the installation/sql directory of the full 4.5.3h package.

You can run the upgrade sql, then finally overwrite the core files with those of 4.5.3h

Edit - for 4.5.1.a - you only need upgrade451to452

(gosh - even I got confused with the Spider there)

Don't forget there is also a two-flie security patch for 4.5.3h

Make sure you back up everything beforehand.Database and files.

To explain properly - there was only one database upgrade from 4.5.1 to 4.5.2.x

There have been no databse upgrades between the 4.5.2.x and 4.5.3.x series.

Man - it is horribly confusing

If you'd been running 4.5 Stable-1.0.9 - there are two upgrades - same goes for 0.7:

I'm not taking responsibility for this But I think the last time I handled one of my own quite old sites it worked fine to totally replace the code with the latest release, run both SQL upgrades, all in one hit. If configuration.php has changed, I think it sorts itself out.

But obviously I'm advising extreme caution with live sites and careful backing up before attempting anything!!
I hope that is not going to cause even more confusion.Honestly, the version numbers are like barcodes. What a perplexing naming convention.

Great thanks. Perfectly clear now. Will surely back everything up and will be doing it on a test domain first. Thank you very much for your help.
