I know there's an open source war going on out there, so hopefully no one gets mad if my question involved joomla AND mambo.
I know it's relatively simple to move a m/j site from one host to another....copy the files, backup the database, create database, restore database, verify paths in config. But what if A) my current host's site is in mambo (4.5.2.3) and on my new host I want to use their fantastico application to install it (to be sure it's a clean/tested install)? And oh, by the way, I want to use Joomla on the new host. I REEEAAALLLY don't want to redo all my content. But I don't know of an ultra-clean way to ensure the database backup/restore would completely work between old host(mambo) and new host (joomla). And am I going to screw up the fantastico records by going & mucking around with the files & folders? |

Hi,
Does your current hosting include cPanel/Fantastico? If so, it's even simpler than you think by either: 1) creating a full site backup. 2) ask new host to transfer the whole site for you Also, Fantastico has both latest Mambo and latest Joomla, so long as your host is up-to-date with Fantastico. Best wishes, - Vince |

No - current hosting provider doesn't have cpanel or fantastico - had to do everything manually there.
I suppose I could.... 1) backup all my files (mambo 4.5.2.3) 2) backup my database 3) do fresh install of mambo on new host using fantastico (in subfolder1) 4) restore/insert data from database, copy custom tempmlates/files 5) now I have restored mambo 4.5.2.3 6) install joomla using fantastico into root folder 7) manually migrate custom mambo files & data from subfolder1 to root folder Does this sounds logical?? Maybe I could even skip steps 3-5 & not worry about mambo on the new host? |

You could skip steps 3 to 5. Just remember to point your configuration file to your restored db, and then run the Mambo to J! update SQL script.

As they say, there are many ways to skin a cat!
Absalom has mentioned another way, and you can see details here: http://help.joomla.org/content/view/818/181/ Another way is to skip your 6 and 7 steps, as latest Fantastico also has a 'migration' from Mambo to Joomla option ready made for you. The only other thing that has been forgotten is to consider which version of MySQL from your current host to new host. Some differences exist between 4.0.xxx and 4.1.xxx that you will need to take care of. - Vince |
