Default trying to create a page to write in and link to it

totally stuck..

I have menu called

KNOWING GOD - on the homepage its not LINKED it just asks almost like a section header..

below it are links ( real menu pages ) i have 5 under knowing god

one is called Why Am I Here this can be found going into the static content manager and on the right hand side under LINK TO MENU i have the name for it.. so obviously it shows up as a link/menu under the MAIN MENU called Knowing God

now.. i want to create a page that doesnt appear as a link on the homepage, it will be linked to from within the page called WHY AM I HERE

question is.. I know to create the page in static content manager.

but

1. i need to set the name of the page i.e whyamiherepart2.html or whyamiherepart2
but I dont know where I tell mambo to do that?

2. once i have that done.. i need to know how to link to that page from within the why am i here page.. do i just go into the whyami here page and used the wysiwyg hyperlink button? or is their a way to tell it what page by selecting from a list of pages created?

Wow... let's see if I understand correctly.

First, do you have search engine friendly (SEF) URLs turned on? This would be the first thing to check, since if you insert HTML links into your content, they'll be wrong if you switch to SEF later and all of your URLs change. Even if they redirect to the SEF URLs, you can't count on search engines to try to figure out that both URLs point to the same page. You might also want to consider implementing OpenSEF on your site.

I think what I wrote answers the first question you posed. If you install OpenSEF and read through the instructions, you'll find that you can give the content any page name you want (for example, content-item-five.html). OpenSEF will automatically allow the URL http www yoursite com/category/section/content-item-five.html to be used to get to that page.

There are mambots you can use to link directly to content items within other content items, but I prefer to create HTML on my hard drive using an editor like NVU. I either use the media gallery in Mambo/Joomla or FTP images directly the appropriate directory and then link to the images using absolute URLs from within my HTML editor. The HTML editor has a WSYIWYG interface and also gives me a lot more control than the editors in Mambo/Joomla. When I'm finished, I copy the HTML between the <body> and </body> tags and paste them into Mambo/Joomla's content editor.

This would allow you to link directly to other content pages using the URLs of those pages. I think you can find the URLs of all the content pages by setting up blogs for all of the categories and putting menu options for those blogs in a restricted user menu module.

Well, that's my way, anyway. I hope some of it is useful to you. God bless!

Hi dhom.. i have a feeling the guy who installed this and set it up wasnt familar with categories and sections.. but he did set up some type of sef

ok this is what i have.. my site is inthepursuitofgod.com

On the homepage their is

knowing God
making god known
church
bible
communities
audio/video/chat
entertainment
shopping

now in the admin all these are found under the menu called MENU

Below each of those i have my STARTER pages ie. for Knowing God

Why am i here
friends with god
a place to belong
it takes time
waling it out
living with purpose

These are all found under Static Content manager. and if you go visit the their you will see that they are all

Under CONTENT BY SECTION in my admin i have

MAMBLOG
NEWS
NEWSFLASHES
FAQ

and i didnt set those up.. i have no clue why they are even there
same applies for category manager i have under there

LATESTNEWS
NEWSFLASH
EXAMPLE FAQ
DEFAULT CATEGORY

again i didnt set those up.. have no clue why they are there.. from what i can see they have no purpose

The way i wanted it was that.. for example

Knowing God i would have 6 main links off that topic which i have

Why am i here
friends with god
a place to belong
it takes time
waling it out
living with purpose

Im kind of getting the feeling that the guy who set this up should have made these categories and the others sections

the purpose was to have a url like this

http://www.inthepursuitofgod.com/knowinggod/whyamihere

filled with content.. then i would have a link or links from that page going off to other pages like a page called whyamiherepart2 and maybe the ulr would be like

[url]http://www.inthepursuitofgod.com/knowinggod/whyamihereparttwo

but for some reason i cant seem to figure out how to do that.. the fella set this up and kind of left me to figure out how to add pages etc..

i tried going to content static manger and clicking new but nowhere does it let me tell it what i want the filename/pagename to be called.. only the title..

so even if i create it.. i cant view the url link for that page.. so bizarre.. im using to working in dreamweaver

im really stuck.. maybe i should be making sections and categories? really lost lol..

Oh, I'm starting to see the problem... He set this up for you and gave you admin access so you could maintain the site.

When Mambo is first installed, it gives the administrator the option of installing some test data so he can find his way around before he starts adding his own content. It sounds like your super administrator (your friend) left that test content in but made sure to un-publish it. I do that too. A lot of my test content is still in there, and I only delete it if it gets in the way.

I can see why you're confused. It took me two weeks to learn Mambo, and I did a lot of forum searches in the process.

Take a look at Anna's Mambo Tips and see if that helps. I think that will answer at least half of your questions.

question is though.. should

knowing god
making god known
church
bible
communities

etc.. be set up as sections

and then anything below it.. be setup as categories?

and if do that will that mess up the current setup

The way your SEF is set up, it looks like it doesn't matter too much as long as you leave things the way they are. To search engines and users, it looks like you've got directories organized in this way:

ROOT -> FOLDER (knowinggod) -> FOLDER (friendswithgod) -> index page

As long as this is the way it looks to them and you can maintain this organization so their bookmarks and links don't break, I think everything should be okay. I don't want to give advice beyond this because I can't see your admin area (ESPECIALLY your SEF component) and don't want to mess things up for you.

If you do decide to move things around, be sure to browse through your entire site and go to File > Save As in your browser for every page. Save those pages in a directory you can find again. After you're done making changes, open up the old versions of your pages and click on all the links. If all the links still work, then there's no problem: The changes you made were invisible to your users, so their links won't be broken.

For this reason, if there is a need to make any changes at all, they should be changes that are only visible to the administrator to make the his life easier.

On the other hand, if you know that Google hasn't indexed your site and that no one's visited to bookmark you or link to you, then you don't have to worry about making more visible changes.

see this is the problem

When the guy created the page

Why am I here

all he did was go into static manager create it then on the right click what menu he wanted to be seen under .. so under LINK TO MENU selected KNOWING GOD then gave it a link menu name i.e. Why am I here

Then now if you go under MENU and select KNOWING GOD under their it shows all the links

why am i here
etc

and if you click on whyamihere you can see a field called SEF and you can see it says

/knowinggod/whyamihere

and i can change that..

Ok now the problem

lets say i want a page called whyamiherepage2 but i dont want it to APPEAR as a link like whyamihere under KNOWING GOD

i just want to create the page.. and then go into why am i here scrol to bottom and create a link to it..

thing is.. i dont know what the page is called to link too.. as it doesnt show me after creating it..

ahhhhhh so annoying lol

Oh, I see... your SEF implementation is totally different from mine. I'm glad I said not to do anything.

It sounds like you should be able to link directly to your new content because of the way your SEF is set up.

For example, if you type into the SEF field

knowinggod/whereamigoing

then you should be able to access the new content from (yourdomain).com/knowinggod/whereamigoing

Knowing this, you should be able to create a link to your content like this:

Code:
<a href="(yourdomain).com/knowinggod/whereamigoing">Where Am I Going When I Die?</a>
Does this answer your question?
