trying to get a basic explanation of this - and also what it means to do a global check-in from the admin panel (for super admin rights)

if i remove this option from the user menu, does it mess things up?

When you edit a content item you it is checked out by you and no one else can edit it while you have it checked out so as to prevent problems with multiple editors.
It is good practice for any editors or such to check their items back in when they are done and that is what the link is for in the user menu.
As admin you can globaly check in all items if you want to work on something that somebody has checked out.

thank you for responding so quickly - very clear explanation.

one workflow item that is unclear: i'm setting up a site so that any registered user can become an author (not an editor, not a publisher) - if that is their level, they'll log in and click 'submit news' or 'submit article' etc - but if i remove the 'check in items' option from their user menu, will that screw up their ability submit pieces? does check in only need to be there if i want to give them the ability to edit pieces after the fact?

what i'm basically trying to do is give users the ability to put in articles (content) and submit for me to approve and publish to the site - i just don't want to wind up in a situation where they want to continuously modify documents from the past, edit, improve, alter etc - that's why i removed 'check in items' from their menu to begin with...

any insight appreciated!

I was wondering the same thing. How can I remove the check in items?

Thanks

No, they should still be able to submit news. So you can just remove it (ur just un-publish it) from the User Menu.
