View Full Version : LOOKING for a talented PROGRAMMER for NOAH's CLASSIFIED Component Project...

Hey,
Anyone out a talented programmer? Good with PHP? Have you written mambo components before? Or do you just want to give it a try anyways? I am not having any luck getting Noah's Classifieds (http://classifieds.phpouthttp://forum.mamboserver.com/images/icons/icon11.gif
Red facesourcing.com/) to work as a mambo component. If you would like to just do the project yourself or work with me. Let me know. I am a designer but could offer an assistance I could. It would be very helpful to the community. I know alot of people have been asking about this.
Thanks,
scubaguy

I'm one of them that has been looking for this. I even tried to hire the author of Noah's Classifieds to do this, but they are too busy. I would be willing to throw in a few dollars towards the cause.

I actually just recieved an email from someone and we are discussing this. That is good to know that you are interested. I want to try to keep it free 1. because that is what Noah's Agreement says and 2. cause I am a firm believer in the open source community. The only way that money would be involved is to pay someones time for the initial developement. Other than that it should be completely FREE. I will post any updates either here or on my site at http://www.gotgtek.com , if you have any question you can drop me an email on the site.

an idea I threw out there awhile ago may apply here. The programmer could name a price and the community pools it's finiancial resources to meet that price. When the project is completed it is released as open source.

Well hello fellow mambo people...
I opened up a project at Mamboforge http://mamboforge.net/projects/noah/ there are not files there yet. But I am working on trying to have something posted soon. I recieved an email from a programmer that might be able to help out. Just depends on howmuch it might run to get this off the ground. So I ask any of you out there that are willing to pitch in to help get this off the ground please repond here so I can build a list of emails. I should have an estimate from him shortly.

Not to burst your bubble, but:
The Noah's Classifieds software may be downloaded and used
free of charge.
The conditions listed below, apply to all users of the program:
The program may not be sold or re-sold without the explicit and written permission of phpoutsourcing.com.
Modified program codes may not be publicised, distributed or sold in any manner.
I'm sure this would prevent anyone from creating a true Mambo component for distribution. If it's done it should NOT be distributed via MamboForge.
doctorj
July 24th, 2005, 01:36
Just so you know, the program would not be sold. The money would ONLY be for creating the mambo component. Paying for the programmer to write the integratoin portion. I know the author does mind as long as we do not charge for the software to downoaded and used. Which it will be opene source of course. Let me know if there is still any confusion.
Thanks!

Thanks!Not trying to be argumentative here, but you're talking about modifying code that has not been released under a license that allows for modified re-distribution and then distributing it as open source.
Just because it's free to download and modify for your own use does not mean it automatically falls under the GPL or any other such license. If the author really doesn't mind, they'll need to provide written consent or release it under a license, perhaps the GPL or some varity of the creative commons license, before anyone releases this as a component.

I completly understand your point. I am not trying to start an argument and I appologize if I sound like I am. The noah code is not going to be modified. At least from the ideas pasted so far. There will simply just be a bridge (the component) in between. Noah will still be a standalone product. Kind of like the Gallery2 Integration I am a part of at http://www.mamboforge.net/projects/gallery2/ If the code (for Noah) was changed then this would violate the license right? But if we can find a way to bridge it without touching it, would this not be legal?
doctorj
July 24th, 2005, 03:51
Also does anyone know what the new email address for phpoutsourcing is? The one on their site gets bounced back to me and a few others that have tried to contact them. I am just curious if this is justus or not.

July 24th, 2005, 06:34
I received a reply recently fro Zoltan askme@zorum.com in response to my question about having them do the conversion.
In order to make it "legal" it would have to be a bridge similar to the distributed bridges made for vBulletin where the Noah's Classified code is not touched and the bridge component does all the work.
The vbridge component http://mamboforge.net/projects/vbridge/ would probably be a good example to work from.

Excellent, I will pass this on. I just had some news that a guy named "Cas" might be working on this. His site is: www.nuy.info (http://www.nuy.info). I am still waiting for an estimate from that programmer though. I will def. post something when he writes back.
scubaguy
July 24th, 2005, 22:21
Cas has done some great Mambo bridges already. I hope the rumour is true. When I was digging around on his site it looked like he had stopped developing the Noah's Classifieds bridge he created for PostNuke.
doctorj
July 24th, 2005, 22:50
Well I actually talked to him through email. He sent me a component for mambo to test. Unfortunately this is not mirror the logins with mambo. It seems that he is very close to finishing this though. So it seems that donations may be going to him if anyone likes the bridge.
I still have not heard back from that other guy though. I hopehe still putting together an estimate. BEcause either way I woould like a great classifieds program for mambo. I know you and many others would as well. I am trying though.
Have you ever heard of NukeC? Here is an exmaple of their classifieds for PHPNuke: http://www.nukec.org/modules.php?name=NukeC30
I think it is a pretty nice one too. We just need something that it more expanable than the few that are out there. I contacted NukeC to see if w could have their permission to further develop their product for mambo. Its just time to hurry up and wait.

Hi,
I haven't seen this before, but there must be a list somewhere of criteria for integrating a 3rd party component? Perhaps this can be fed to the programmer of the noah's component.
I'm sure others can add to this list:
eg.
- integrated user DB
- single login session
- integrated pathway
- no second set of scroll bars
- menu navigation done by mambo menus, not the component
- full CSS customizeability
- a cms_integration template (bare bones to fit into any CMS main body)
doctorj
July 25th, 2005, 01:15
That is some good information Keymaster. I will def pass that on. If he writes me back I will ask him if he just wants to even write a Classifieds system from scratch that way no one can say anything about licensing. Either way Hopefully scubaguy and myself can scrounge up enough cash to pay for his time. WOuld you (keymaster) will be willing to donate to the programmer just fore the initial intergration?
doctorj
July 25th, 2005, 02:07
This is Cool, Read this!
"Hello,
We give you the permission of releasing the program under GNU license.
Please, note however, that the program hasn't been written in an "open source"-manner! It was simply not a requirement and neither of encouraging other programmers to rewrite it. This means, it is quite large and complicated, poorly commented and mostly in Hungarian. So, we have some doubts that you can integrate it with Mambo, and we are too busy with our running projects to help you in this, unfortunately.
Best luck anyway,
Zoltan Nemeth,
PhpOutsourcing"
So this means that we have the the go ahead for the intergration. And we can modify whatever needs to be. This is a good step in the right direction. I am going to have to save that email! I will let you know as things progress further.

I am the developer who's been talking with DoctorJ. Im looking over the code and getting an idea of the scope of this work. I wanted to get a clear sense of what other's feel is important for integrating a 3rd party component. Keymaster had a list - now that we have permission to change the sources, I think some of these become obvious
- integrated user DB
- single login session
Well, of course. Otherwise you really don't have integration. Obviously now that we have permission to modify the Noah code itself, this is much simpler.
- integrated pathway
This is possible.
- no second set of scroll bars
I'm not sure what's meant by this. Perhaps I've missed seeing some poorly integrated components. Or having access to the source makes this a non-issue.
- menu navigation done by mambo menus, not the component
For noah I had in mind a "toolbar" of links that would perform the needed functions (similar to the toolbar in Noah currently, but with a number of items removed since we have login through Mambo).
- full CSS customizeability
- a cms_integration template (bare bones to fit into any CMS main body)
Could you explain more these two?
I'd be interested in hearing opinions on the importance of the administration being done in the back end (as almost all Mambo administration is done). I think it's pretty important, but that will be a large piece of work because Noah has no "back end" currently and relies on the navigation of the front end to aid the administrator interface.
eyezberg
July 25th, 2005, 10:10
- no second set of scroll bars
Probably means wrapped components, where the wrapper can sometimes show in-content scrollbars for too large 3PD scripts => no need to worry about if it's integrated
-backend admin, imho, is not an absolute necessity, if good frontend access to everything is provided; normal users who want to post an ad will probably have frontend access only too; components such as the a6 helpdesk do fine with frontend only (but that's just me..).
keymaster
July 26th, 2005, 07:49
- no second set of scroll bars
Means you don't want it wrapped so there are no vertical or horizontal scroll bars to deal with on the wrapper window if the text exceeds either the width or lenght of the window.
If the code is integrated, that is not an issue.
- navigation done by mambo menus
Means it fits nicely into the classic mambo navigation approach. If there is a links toolbar in the window, as well a an overhead horizontal mambo menu, things might look confusing or awkward. Especially if there are graphics involved which do not match the site's mambo template. You want it to fit into almost any mambo template, look and feel wise.
- full CSS customizeability
the more the better. This helps the final bit of tweaking to make it blend nicely into any site.
- cms integration template
A template which strips out any Noah's logos/site links (except perhaps for a discreet text copyright at the bottom).
- backend integration
Don't think it is necessary at all. Not worth spending any time on in my opinion.
- Can you develop it in prototype mode, ie. code a release, let people test it out, find bugs, report them, include the fixes into next release together with the new functionality, release it... rather than one long span of time with a few bug fix releases at the end. Provided people are willing to help you test out buggy software, you will probably end up with a higher quality product in less time by having concurrent development/test cycles. The gallery2 component, is a good example of this, as was the mambo-smf forum.
Lots of success!

The developer David, is working up an estiamte as we speak. So does anyone have any ideas on how much we should pitch in for his Time, Scuba or anyone? I want to be fair to pay for his time making the component. Also this will be a free download after the instial developement is completed. Just an FYI.

The developer "David" is currently working on the project. Since he has many projects of his own, I told him that their is not set time frame. But if I had to take a guess I would say somewhere around early to mid september of 2005. This is only a guess though. If you have any more questions let me know.

My plan is to get an alpha out next week (assuming nothing unusual happens).
The Noah developers were being modest - they did a good job of component-izing things so integrating it into mambo is not as difficult as I imagined. Making real changes to the code itself will probably be more difficult, but I don't think we'll need to make too many initially.
The first version will have all the administration in the front end (which is how Noah does it currently).
scubaguy
August 4th, 2005, 07:55
the admin on the frontend is fine and actually preferrable for many people, especially the less technical.
Did David come up with a price yet for the work?
doctorj
August 4th, 2005, 18:20
He mentioned that he would like people to see his work and then he would discuss it from there. He is a very talented man. You should read his profile on his website. http://www.davidmckinnisconsulting.com
I would highly suggest sending him a donation if you like the work he has done. But as David said, "He will have something out soon". :) <><

I PMed ScubaGuy. Rather than calling it a "price" we're going to call it a "goal", since I'm not going to hold up releasing this because people haven't given enough. And then people can give over time and as new people use it, they can also contribute.

Hey people!
David has finished an Alpha Release and it looks awsome! He will a file shortly on mamboforge.net. Here is a demo: http://www.gotgtek.com/shop/index.php?option=com_noah&Itemid=57
The login information is posted on the page, if you would like to submit an ad.
Cheers,
troy45
August 9th, 2005, 10:30
Wow, that's pretty sweet. Does it use the same login as Mambo yet? Looking forward to trying out the alpha version. :D
doctorj
August 9th, 2005, 11:11
Yes, all logins are mambo users. So basically you do not need to sync any users at all! They just work with that component. You view all ads from the frontend without having to login, but to submit an ad you will need to login first.
For administration, its done through the frontend. I wish I could open that up for a demo, but I can't open up that access to the server for security reasons. If anyone wants screenshots just visit the http://classifieds.phpoutsourcing.com/screenshots.php
Everything looks the same except David removed the sample content. Which I think is much better.
If you have any questions please let me know. Also if you like the release please make a donation to David. His website is: www.davidmckinnisconsulting.com (http://www.davidmckinnisconsulting.com )
See you all later!

So the alpha drop is up on MamboForge (and I don't know if the new server had anything to do with this, but as soon as I uploaded it, it was on the downloads page - mighty fast).
You can find it at http://mamboforge.net/projects/noah/
I have yet to set-up my business PayPal account (too many other things to do). So if you feel compelled to give immediately, the PHPOutsourcing folks (http://www.phpoutsourcing.com) deserve a lot of credit for making a reasonably easy to port piece of code. I'll get my PayPal account in order and up on my website momentarily.
There is still a lot to do (thus the "alpha" designation). And I must warn people that I don't think I'll have time for this again for about a month (I have a vacation and some other deadlines to fit in before then). But play with it, enter bugs in the bug tracker, and we'll do another release in October (depending on how many issues there are).

August 9th, 2005, 22:30
I also posted this on the mamboforge site.
I am getting a conflict error with Noah's and the dtree menu module.
Notice: Undefined variable: target in /home/mysite/public_html/modules/mod_dtreemenu.php on line 234
Anyone have any ideas on how to fix that? Otherwise it seems to work great. Very nice work. Where is that donation button?
doctorj
August 10th, 2005, 13:53
I put the latest dtree module on my test server and had the same results. You might want to enter this on the bug base over at mamboforge. As David said earlier this is an alpha release so the fixes may or may not get included in the next release poss. in October. =(
I will continue to play with this and see if I can fix it though.
scubaguy
August 10th, 2005, 15:39
I actually did enter it already with a quick fix.
in mod_dtreemenu.php at line 234 add
$target = "_parent";
so the code now looks like
// create the first node, parent is always -1
$target = "_parent";
$content .= "$tree.add($baseid,-1,\"$basename\",\"$baselink\",\"\",\"$target\")\n";
I didn't find any adverse effects by doing this and it made the error message go away.

Hi, first off, I really appreciate the effort put into this component. I've been looking for something like this for awhile.
I installed the component on my test server(4.5.2) and created a menu item, but when I try to access it on the front end, I get this:
The XML page cannot be displayed

This looks like a duplicate of ScubaGuy's bug. Noah turns on some error checking and doesn't turn it off when it's done, which can have an affect on other modules.
I've posted a patch for noah.php in the Mamboforge patch tracker for Noah

Just install the component from the mambo backend and it should be ready at that point. Then create a menu item pointing to it and you should have a working noah bridge.

Great work!!! Looks like this component is exactly what I was looking for
Just installed it on my local host for testing and linked it to Mambo menu,

My question is: how I can go to administrative section to setup configuration,
categories and etc.

All configurations are done through the frontpage. i.e. login to mambo (the frontend) and then goto noah. If you are an admin you will see settings and many other options listed. If you need any other help let me know.

Still in trouble, told you that i'm at first experience with mambo.
First don't know what kind of menu type should I add to point to noah bridge, i tried every type but no luck.
And one more question: after i make this work will look like this: http://www.gotgtek.com/shop/index.php?option=com_noah&Itemid=57 ?
Thank You

August 25th, 2005, 05:59
Yes close at least. That is my test server. Just create a new menu link as a "component". Then select Noah from the list and give it a name. Then after it has created the menu item make sure it is published. i.e. No red X next to it. It should have a green check mark by it. Now view your site and you should see it.
After you see Noah (or whatever you named the menu item) on the main menu, just login to the login form as an administrator. Whatever that login may be. Then click on noah and you can start to add categories there.
Good Luck.

I think i do something wrong.
Because I don't have noah in component list after i created a new menu link as component.
There is a noah's classified component for mambo too ? Not only the module ?
All I did was install mambo ( default package ) and add noah's classified module.
That's all. tell me if i must install something else.
And ofcourse i have noah installed separately.
Thanks again for your quick answer.

You have to install the component. The module is just an extension of the component. Here is a link to the component you need: http://mamboforge.net/frs/download.php/6981/com_noah-.5alpha.zip
This is an Alpha release sotheir will be problems. It is not stable yet. If you have any bugs please post them at http://mamboforge.net/tracker/?atid=5083&group_id=1736&func=browse

All administration for Noah is done through the frontend. Just noah has always been. Login as an administrator and then click on the noah menu item. This will show you the admin settings. Then you can create categories from there.

Hi Doctorj,
Thank you for fast and very helpful replies.
Right now I’m able to configure Noah’s component
through its front page. When I try to add new category’s,
I’m getting to the category adding page and is able to
put name, description and picture. However, when
I press “OK” this category is not added. Basically I cannot
see category list. I installed Noah's Classifieds as a stand-alone
application to compare. In stand-alone version everything
works fine. I can add category’s, submit ads, select and edit
variable fields of advertisements. What could be the problem?

Other than that being a bug, try un-publishing all other modules on that page and see if was just a conflict. If not goto the mamboforge project and post the bug.
I did as told. I unpublished the modules and the classified section that I mentioned was showing all the way to the right, shifted well to the center of the page.
BUt i cant keep it this way, the modules are important to have for my website. What should I do? :confused:

Some noah installations have a problem because Noah turns on some error reporting and doesn't turn it off. Open your noah.php file in the components folder..../components/com_noah/.... and replace the files contents with this:
<?php
defined( '_VALID_MOS' ) or die( 'Direct Access to this location is not allowed.' );
// TODO: Consider removing this for release builds. Nice to have for testing releases
$errOld = error_reporting(63);
$stNoahDir = mosPathName(dirname(__FILE__),true);
$stNoahHttpDir = $mosConfig_live_site . "/components/com_noah/";
$xi=$stNoahHttpDir . "i";
include($stNoahDir . "/constants.php");
include($stNoahDir . "/gorum/gorum.php");
include($stNoahDir . "/include.php");
gorumMain($s);
echo $s;
error_reporting($errOld);
class mambo_user
{
var $isAdm=false;
var $id=0;
var $name='';
var $email='';
}
?>
This should fix that problem. This is an apla release still, so please understand that their will be bugs too.

When I try to add new category’s,
I’m getting to the category adding page and is able to
put name, description and picture. However, when
I press “OK” this category is not added. Basically I cannot
see category list.
Im using Apache with Windows2000, installed Apache, MySQL and
PHP with the latest version of easyPHP and using easyPHP to start
Apache and MySQL on my local host.

Hi Doctorj,
Thanks for the help.
I did something different and still works fine. From the backend i unchecked Classified through the menuItem link, so its showing on the rest of the links on my site except in Classified link.
If anyone else has this trouble you can use this method.
On another hand, im searching if I can add a sub catagory to my main catagory, I am not sure if this been already discussed in this thread but unable to find any solution so far.
Pls advise.
Thank you, :)

Noah allows uploading multiple images per ads and using wysiwyg editor?
Which classified component does?

As far as I m familiar with Noah, it doesnt allow multiple images and everything is done from the frontend, so in that sense you cant do anything with wysiwyg.editor.
You can search through this site to find which component does http://forum.mamboserver.com/showthread.php?t=48122

Hey,
Anyone out a talented programmer? Good with PHP? Have you written mambo components before? Or do you just want to give it a try anyways? I am not having any luck getting Noah's Classifieds to work as a mambo component. If you would like to just do the project yourself or work with me. Let me know. I am a designer but could offer an assistance I could. It would be very helpful to the community. I know alot of people have been asking about this.
Also you should post this message there http://www.noahsclassifieds.tk .There is official support website for Noah's Classifieds

Hi,
Where is the "official" forum for the mambo/joomla component com_noah?
Is it this thread? Is it on GTEK? Where should everyone be looking for news?
Thanks.

Well, to some degree nothing is wrong (but you need to understand how HTTP works to know this).
When you refresh the page the posted data is resent (Firefox's warning is a bit more clear than IE's on this) and in Mambo, that causes the action is carried out again. In this case, the data causes the category to be created again.
Obviously it would be nice for Noah to avoid this. So we should add it to the bug list and investigate.
Nice find!

I have been following this development..I have used noah's for quite a while....well I used too...what I mean by that is noah's is designed to run only on php4 it looks like....my sever upgraded to php5 and it will nolonger work....the so called support website is the farthest thing from it.....so I am assuming the bug still exists even in this type of installation...am I correct?
Thanks

We should be releasing the first beta of the 1.0 version of the Noah component soon (next week if all goes well) and I have tried to make it work with PHP5. That is, I've fixed all the obvious problems and it works on my machine (which is what we developers always say :) ). I'm sure there is at least one subtle PHP5 bug somewhere, but my intent is that it should work on PHP5. If there are specific bugs in the Beta with PHP5, those should be entered and we'll solve those individually.
