I must sing the praises of a new component that I just discovered.

I had been wanting something that would offer URL's that make sense, like: "/about/archives/current" instead of something like "/section/1/65/".

There is a commercial product out there which I hear is quite good, but I can never afford this kind of stuff.

So I contended myself with the built in SEF feature.

Then found Xaneon Alias Manager. They just released v1.0.2 and it is sweet. There is of course room for improvement, and I believe the dev of it are working to implement a few neat features already.

What it does: Takes the mambo generated URLs, and transforms them into anything you declare. So you can say that when you get "/section/1/65/", the URL should be "/about/archives/current". Or it could be "/anything/you/want/".

*Really* nice. Check it out: http://dev.xaneon.com/

Now, I must point out, I'm just a happy user, don't gain anything by posting this :)

A major advantage: You get good looking, usable URL's.
A major disadvantage: It's not automated, you have to manually define each alias, which could quickly turn out to be a PITA if you have lots of links.

Cheers, and have fun.

... but automation is on the roadmap, see http://dev.xaneon.com/products/alias/roadmap.html (BTW this is an example of what you get with the Alias Manager).

This looks like an excellent product to me.

Kind regards,

Thanks for the kudos, guys. The positive response to Alias Manager (http://dev.xaneon.com/products/alias/), which is our first publicly available component, has been very encouraging 8)

*Some*?? LOL I have so far over 100 forwarders on a site. Yeowza.

What would be really cool, I think, would be if all active links could be pulled into a list, associated with what section/category/item or combination thereof, then the new suggested alias, with a manual override.

So you could get something like this:
URL: /content/view/45/2/
Refers to: My Section, My Category, My Page
Suggested Alias: /mysection/mycategory/mypage
Do you want to override?

Just food for thoughts.

Additional features of interest in 1.1 will include preliminary front-end multilanguage support and a new option for automatic component URL "prettification" (/component/option,com_simpleboard/ -> /simpleboard/). We should have 1.1.0 out sometime this week and it will be an easy upgrade for current 1.0.2 users.
