There are many ways to view and run mambo locally the easyiest I know of is the "Mambo Stand Alone Server"
Mabey Try this link out:
http://mamboforge.net/projects/msas/
Although it's for the older version of Mambo

Currently that is what version of mambo it is for but I would look into upgrading your site for security reasons

MSAS is real simple to use or if you're brave, try this (http://forum.mamboserver.com/showthread.php?t=66476)

Sorry, I'm not sure UI understand
do you mean using an older version to build the site and then upgrade afterwards before I go live?

No, I'm not brave at all, complete novice, so green I could pass as a green bean!

Try MSAS then, but WAMP5 and/or XAMPP are not that difficult. Actually it's fairly easy I would try.

No I mean start with the new version and get the basic parts working then use go live, after that use the mention systems to test your site upgrades and debug on your local computer or secondary site. (I personally prefer using a secondary site that is on a server with same stats as primary site, this could be done with a subdomain, just don't forget to shut down the secondary site when your not using it for developing)
You see a little of something is way better than alot of nothing start small and work your self up at your own pace but don't avoid going live because you don't have every thing the way you want on the site.
a site with bad graphics and grahmer is better than none at all.

That's how I do things too :) I mean,it sounds like MSAS is cool, and would be interesting to play around with.I'm not saying I'd never try it,but the only way to know how things are going to look and behave in a live environment (for me) is to build them in a live environment in the first place.
Unless perhaps you run your computer as a server or something.I'd love to try that in about ten years time when I know what I'm doing :)
Dunno, maybe I'm just an on-the-fly type of gal.
