Not sure if anyone has been following the latest stories or not...but it just seems that Microsoft and SCO...want to own the world and are a bunch of cry babies when it comes down to the truth!!!

Like to hear others thoughts and opinions.

Microsoft operates the way IBM did back in the mainframe heyday. They are not "early-adapters," their OS is not the fastest, has the smallest footprint, or is the most elegant or bug-free...but, they eventually eat up market share because they cater to the masses, not the techies.

Back in the dark ages of computing, while the Unix vendors were taking extreme measures to make sure their "Open OS" was in reality proprietary to the vendor...Sun, HP, Silicon Graphics and a bunch of now also-rans. While they were busily fragmenting Unix into a bunch of "almost compatible environments," Microsoft plodded along and finally hit the big time with Windows 95.

Why does Microsoft have such a large market share? Its simple...more people buy their stuff...there has always been an alternative (Apple), but the consumer market way more often than not, chose Microsoft Windows and relatively cheap Intel x86 boxes rather than Apple's more elegant yet pricey closed system.

And SCO is just a pimple on the Linux Elephant's A...

I use both Windows and Linux...both have their good and bad points...

The above is my opinion..I'm sure there a many more

I use Apple (OS 9 and OS X) on two pc's (17" iMac and PPC 7600), Win XP and Linux (Suse Pro 9.0) on an Athlon XP 1100 (or 1700 if you prefer). I use them for different reasons and think that all have their place. However, from a practical point of view I have found:

1. My 10 year old PPC 76000 Mac is more stable than any Wintel box I have ever used (home and work) and has hardly ever crashed in 10 years. I have also never lost any data on it from a hardware failure, unlike the Wintel boxes I've used!)

2. Apple equipment may be more expensive, but the gap is getting smaller (generally you get more built in with a Mac to start off with).

3. Games are more available with Wintel boxes (important to my 10 year-old son!)

4. I find doing web design stuff, digital photography and dtp stuff easier and more relaxing on the Mac.

5. I am a newbie with Linux but find it less stressfull than Win XP and intend to get into it more.

So, I guess what I am saying is that yes, Bill Gates is not the most likeable chap in the world and we can all find reasons to hate him/MS, but at the end of the day everyone is free to choose. I'm just glad that Win XP is there to make me realise how great the Mac and Linux are!

Micorosoft is absolutly correct in bundeling windows media player with their OS and should not get anything for it....

Users want a complete OS you don't want to install 100 different apps to play every format that is out there, that is way quicktime and real player alternatives are created. People don't want to use 3/4 different programs to watch a movie on the web.

It's like saying a CMS can't come with a Forum because it could be competition for PHPBB/VBB/IPB.. it doesn't make any sense.

What did suprise me though that microsoft got a fine because they delibaretly mutilated msn.com for opera users

SCO: You want answers?
IBM: I think I'm entitled to them.
SCO: You want answers?
IBM: I want the truth!
SCO: You can't handle the truth! Son, we live in a world that has copyrights. And those copyrights have to be guarded by companies with lawyers. Who's gonna do it? You? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Linux and you curse the lawyers. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: that Linux's death, while tragic, probably saved money. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves money...You don't want the truth. Because deep down, in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me pressing this lawsuit. You need me pressing this lawsuit.
We use words like profit, lawsuit, intellectual property...we use these words as the backbone to a life spent defending something. You use 'em as an epiphet. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who works and codes under the blanket of the very source I provide, then questions the manner in which I provide it! I'd rather you just said thank you and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a compiler and write your own. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you're entitled to!
IBM: Did you try and screw Linux?
SCO: (quietly) I did the job MS sent me to do.
IBM: Did you try and screw Linux?
SCO: You're goddamn right I did!!
